Taste of Italy
Think of Italy: its history and culture.
Dream of Italy: the rolling landscapes of the Renaissance artists.
Imagine Italy: the food and the wine.
Experience all of these on this tour that takes you off the beaten path to taste quintessentially Italian dishes in parts of Tuscany and Umbria.
You\'ll leave Rome in a northerly direction, driving along the picturesque Tiber valley, and reach Cortona midmorning. Perched at 600 m altitude, with spectacular views over the Val di Chiana and the Lake Trasimeno, town has changed little since the Middle Ages. More recently depicted in the Oscar winning film "La Vita è Bella" and described by American novelist Frances Mayes in "Under the Tuscan Sun", Cortona is enjoying a renewed popularity. Here, we\'ll take a stroll through the historic center, discover its hidden corners, and absorb the atmosphere of this picturesque town.
We\'ll then continue on, and drive along the protected shores of Lake Trasimeno, largest lake of Italy south of the Po river. We\'ll stop to taste some of the many local products, such as olive oil, cheeses, salami, and ham. Of course, you\'ll have the opportunity to purchase those delicacies, too!
At this point, it’ll be time to enjoy your Umbrian lunch, which will be served in a traditional countryside restaurant.
In the afternoon, driving through the gentle hills of the Chianti region, we\'ll reach the hilltop town of Montepulciano. This town’s deep ruby red wine, the Vino Nobile, is famous the world over. We\'ll visit one of its oldest wine cellars carved out of the volcanic tufa rock, and discover some of the secrets of the winemakers and of course taste the final result.
Return to the vicinity of your hotel in Rome 7:00-8:00pm approximately.
